TI  - Transformative learning theory and coaching: Application in practice

AB  - The aim of the research reported in this paper was to discover if and how transformative learning theory is applied in coaching. Data were collected from eight coaches through semi-structured interviews. The findings of the study revealed four emerging themes: space and context of the coaching environment; the coaching relationship; dialogue, language and communication; and transformation. The research also found robust links between the fields of coaching and adult learning theory, specifically, Mezirow’s six core elements of transformation. The paper concludes that coaching can benefit from the application of transformative learning theory and that individuals can also learn more effectively through the coaching process. Implications are drawn for transformative learning in coaching.
