AB  - The skill development of executive coaches remains more an art than a science. Building on the models of skill acquisition and expertise development, this qualitative, descriptive study involved 26 executive coaches, with and without formal coaching credentials. The data from the advanced beginner and expert level coaches were thematically analyzed. The results include confirmation that discernable differences exist between advanced beginner and expert executive coaches and that the Dreyfus model applies to coaching. Other results include that self-awareness and client-centered focus increases with skill level, coaching presence is more confident and coaching role is clearer as skill level increases, and expert coaches seek knowledge and experience in distinct ways.
