AB - As expectations of leaders continue to grow in a more complex and interconnected world, it becomes important to understand the characteristics of highly effective leaders. Leaders need to be self-aware and deal with ambiguity as they coach others while promoting their team’s engagement. The present study explored which behaviours and competencies correlate with these measures of effective leadership. A large sample of European leaders were rated by their bosses, peers and direct reports on their leadership behaviours and competencies. Different patterns relating behaviour and competencies were found at different stages of leadership development. These results provide empirical insights for leadership coaching. Originality/Value: The ability of leaders to manage complexity and ambiguity, and their ability to coach others through the same while keeping their teams engaged, is a growing aspect of leadership effectiveness. This new study describes and measures the specific characteristics of effective leadership using an empirical approach.
