TI - Leadership and organizational functioning: Organizational regression.
AU - Kernberg, O.F.
AB - Regressive behavior in organizations is examined using a systems approach. Three organizational situations are identified that result in regressive behavior: dependency groups in which members perceive the leader as being omnipotent; pairings, or situations in which group members attach symbolic meanings to interrelations between 2 selected members; and the fight-flight situation, in which group members either unite in fending off perceived external threats or splinter into warring subgroups. Regressive leadership behavior is considered, and organizational sexual politics are discussed. Four case studies are used to illustrate discussions. The merits of utilizing a systems approach in the study of group processes are also explored.
